Emma Stone ha avuto il compito di presentare sul palco degli Oscar la categoria Miglior Regista conquistata da Guillermo del Toro, ma le sue parole sono state duramente criticate online sui social media.
La star di La La Land ha infatti dichiarato: "E' il regista il cui tocco indelebile si riflette in ogni inquadratura. E' il regista che, scena dopo scena, giorno dopo giorno, lavora con ogni membro della troupe per costruire la storia. Questi quattro uomini, e Greta Gerwig, hanno creato un proprio capolavoro in questa annata".
Online si è però puntato il dito contro l'attrice che avrebbe ignorato deliberatamente che si è dato spazio anche alle minoranze che hanno lavorato duramente per ottenere l'importante riconoscimento della nomination, come ad esempio Jordan Peele e il messicano Guillermo del Toro.
Su Twitter si è sottolineato che le sue parole hanno sminuito gli altri candidati, ricordando inoltre come l'attrice sia "colpevole" di aver interpretato un personaggio di origine asiatica in Sotto il cielo delle Hawaii e di aver lavorato due volte per Woody Allen.
