La cerimonia di premiazione della trentatreesima edizione degli Independent Spirit Awards si svolgerà il 3 marzo, con la conduzione di John Mulaney e Nick Kroll.
I riconoscimenti hanno spesso indicato quali sono i titoli e gli attori favoriti alla corsa per gli Oscar, come accaduto un anno fa con Casey Affleck e Moonlight, e in questa annata si distinguono, almeno per quanto riguarda il numero di nomination, Luca Guadagnino con il suo Chiamami col tuo nome, Scappa - Get Out, Lady Bird, Good Time. Tra i registi c'è in corsa anche Jonas Carpignano per A Ciambra.
